Just When You Think You Are Getting Through
On Monday evening, I was studying the Good Samaritan with my Favorite Boy and Best Girl. I started by explaining that the story of the Good Samaritan was a parable that Jesus told. My Favorite Boy said, "Oh, yes! That's like a fiction story, but Jesus used it to teach a lesson."
I told him that he was exactly right, and we continued. When we got to the part about the priest and Levite passing by the wounded man without helping, my Favorite Boy said, "They were God's helpers, so they should have helped! It would be like if we were on the way to church, and we saw someone who needed help, God would want us to stop and help, right?"
Again, I told him that he was right, and I was feeling good about our discussion. We got to the end of the story where the Good Samaritan told the innkeeper that he would pay for any expenses that the injured man might incur. At that point, my Favorite Boy exclaimed, "Well, why did he do that? Now they won't call him the Good Samaritan, they'll have to call him the Poor Samaritan!"
I guess we still have work to do. :)
